Part of what makes the diving in Zavora so incredibly special is the significantly large number of manta ray found here, including Manta biostris, also known as “Giant Mantas”, with wing spans of more than 20 feet. Mantas in Zavora are encountered on both the in-shore and off-shore reef systems, but it is the in-shore cleaning stations that are unique, as they can be observed by either scuba or free diving at cleaning stations a mere 20-30 feet deep. It is not uncommon to see anywhere from 5 to 10 individual mantas on a single dive.
Divers typically stay at Zavora Lodge that houses Zavora’s dive resort. Following breakfast at the lodge, dive briefings take place to plan the days schedule. The boat and kit is then transferred to the sheltered launch site (one of the easiest and most relaxing along the Mozambique coast) where guests jump aboard. The dives are split between the offshore reef system and the inshore reef system. The deep dive (circa 20-30m) is routinely dived first, then a cool off period is spent on board chatting before moving inshore to the shallow reef. Following the second dive guests zip back to land to enjoy the Mozambique afternoon and sunset.
