Gansbaai is world renowned as the capital of white shark cage diving. The shark route stops off to experience the incredible great whites residing at Dyer Island. Guests will also get down and dirty on a personalised snake tour with legendary naturalist Andre Hartman.
Mossel Bay is one of the few protected bays along South Africa’s southern coast. The sheltered waters offer a great location to soak in more great whites, as well as enjoy some other endemic shark species. Mossel Bay is also home to Oceans Research, and shark route travellers will immerse themselves in the ground breaking research stemming from this institute.
Tsitsikamma lies slap-bang in the middle of the garden route, home to some of South Africa’s most beautiful landscapes. Here adventures abound, and the shark route laps them all up.
Zone 2 begins in South Africa’s friendly city, Port Elizabeth. The reefs of Algoa bay are home to the countries densest populations of ragged-tooth sharks, whilst the offshore Agulhas current hosts wandering mako and blue sharks.

Just offshore from Shelly beach is arguably South Africa’s greatest shark diving reef – Protea Banks. These banks host a huge diversity of sharks. This pinnacle challenges all divers, but the rewards for those who conquer it are immense.

Umkomaas is homebase as the Shark Route ventures to the famed Aliwal shoal. This shoal is home to the world renowned baited tiger shark dives and is a must see for all shark enthusiasts.
Zone 2 ends with a few relaxing expeditions around Durban city. The world class U’Shaka marine world awaits, whilst guests also inspect the controversial but educational Natal Sharks Board.
Zone 3 of the Shark Route hits the ground running as we journey to the world heritage site of Sodwana Bay. The bays reefs are the Southern most coral reefs of Africa and the sanctuary hosts an incredible assortment of marine life including whale sharks and reef sharks.
The Shark Route next crosses the border into beautiful Mozambique. The diving action is centered around the famed Pinnacles reef, home to a resident population of bull sharks. However, the incredible hospitality and culture of this country is embraced during the stay.
The Shark Route travels north to one of Africa’s newest and most pristine diving reef systems. Sodwana bay is an isolated gem where manta rays will surround guests on every dive.
The final stop of this epic adventure is Tofu. This bustling town is ground zero for sharks and rays in Mozambique. It is a hub for dive operators, scientists, film makers and conservationists. A great way to end a great adventure.
